Apple working on bringing Apple TV app to Android phones

Ana sayfa / News

Apple is finally taking steps to make the Apple TV app available on Android phones and tablets, according to a report from Bloomberg. The tech giant is currently in the process of hiring engineers to develop the software, marking a significant shift in its strategy. Previously, Apple had created an app for the Android smart TV platform but had not extended this functionality to Android smartphones and tablets.

Until now, Android phone users who wanted to watch Apple TV+ shows or enjoy MLS Season Pass were limited to using the web experience at tv.apple.com. While functional, a web app lacks the convenience and features of a native application, such as offline downloads and a more integrated user experience.

The Apple TV app offers a wide range of functionalities. It includes access to Apple TV+ originals, various Apple TV channels, and the ability to buy and rent movies and shows through the Store. Additionally, it serves as the hub for Apple’s expanding sports offerings, such as Friday Night Baseball and the MLS Season Pass.

Bringing the Apple TV app to Android aligns with Apple’s approach to Apple Music. When Apple Music launched in 2015 with iOS 8.4, it was initially exclusive to iOS devices. However, the app was made available on Android later that same year. In contrast, the Apple TV app, which debuted in 2019, has remained exclusive to iPhones until now.

Beyond mobile devices, Apple has made the Apple TV app accessible on a variety of third-party platforms. This expansion is driven by the need to increase viewership for its Apple TV+ streaming service. The app is currently available on Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, PlayStation, Xbox, Xfinity cable boxes, and other non-Apple devices. Last year, Apple even launched a native Windows desktop app.

While it is encouraging that Apple is finally developing a native Apple TV app for Android, the timeline for its release remains uncertain. If the project is in the early stages, it might be some time before Android users can download and use the app. Nevertheless, this move is expected to significantly enhance the accessibility of Apple TV+ for non-iPhone users.

By expanding the availability of the Apple TV app to Android devices, Apple is set to make its streaming service more accessible to a broader audience. This move will likely enhance user experience and attract more subscribers to Apple TV+.
